A Magical Day at Orval Abbey: History, Nature, and Local Delights
Just 35 minutes from Corbion, between deep forests and peaceful valleys, lies a place where time seems to stand still: the Abbey of Notre-Dame d’Orval. A perfect destination for both young and old, where heritage, spirituality, nature, and regional flavors come together.
✨ A Cistercian Gem in the Heart of the Gaume
Tucked away in the Gaume forest near the French-Belgian border, the Orval Abbey was founded in the 11th century by Italian Benedictine monks. It flourished after joining the Cistercian Order in 1132. Ravaged by wars and eventually destroyed during the French Revolution, the abbey was brought back to life in the 20th century by a community of Trappist monks.
Today, Orval is known not only for its architectural and spiritual beauty but also for its famous Trappist beer and cheese, produced with care and tradition. The abbey remains a living space of prayer, hospitality, and silence, welcoming visitors and pilgrims from around the world.
🧭 The Legend
According to legend, Countess Matilda of Tuscany, a benefactor of the abbey, lost her wedding ring while drawing water from a spring. In tears, she prayed to the Virgin Mary. Moments later, a trout leapt from the water with the golden ring in its mouth. Amazed, Matilda cried out: “Truly, this is a Golden Valley!”—and so, the name "Orval" was born.
To this day, the legendary fountain adorned with a sculpture of a trout holding a ring reminds visitors of this tale of wonder and gratitude.
🍺 Tasty Pause at the Tavern "L'Ange Gardien"
After exploring the ruins, museum, and sacred spring, stop at La Taverne de l’Ange Gardien, right across from the abbey. It is the only place in the world where you can taste the Orval Verte, a lighter version of the renowned Trappist beer, brewed exclusively for the monks… and their guests!
👉 Families are welcome: simple regional dishes, artisanal drinks, and even pancakes for dessert!
